Parashat Beha’alotcha: Raising the Lamps – Lighting the Fire of Continual Service
This week’s parasha, Beha’alotcha (“When you light/raise up”), opens with a beautiful and practical command:
“Adonai spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Speak to Aaron and say to him: When you light the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the menorah.’ Aaron did so; he lit the lamps so as to give light in front of the menorah, just as Adonai had commanded Moses.” (Numbers 8:1-3 TLV)
Aaron is instructed to carefully raise and light the lamps of the golden menorah so that their light shines forward, illuminating the Holy Place. The menorah was the only source of light inside the Mishkan. Without it, the priests would walk in darkness. The lamps had to be tended daily — cleaned, filled with pure olive oil, and lit so the flame would burn continually.
Beloved, this simple act carries deep spiritual meaning. In Messiah Yeshua we are called to be lamps as well. Yeshua said, “You are the light of the world… Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). Just as Aaron raised the lamps, we are to raise and tend the light of the Ruach HaKodesh within us so that it shines outward for the sake of others.
The menorah also points to Yeshua Himself — the true Light of the World (John 8:12). He is the pure oil, the perfect flame, and the One who continually intercedes so that the light never goes out. When we feel dim, weary, or distracted, Beha’alotcha calls us back to the daily work of tending the flame: clearing away the soot of sin and distraction, filling ourselves with the pure oil of the Word and the Spirit, and lifting the light so it shines in front of us for the benefit of others.
May we be faithful lamp-lighters, raising the light of Messiah in a dark world until the day when the Lamb Himself is our everlasting light (Revelation 21:23).
Mussar Exercise: Cultivating Zerizut (Zeal / Alacrity)
Theme: Faithfully Tending and Raising the Light of Messiah
Middah (Character Trait): Zerizut (zeal / alacrity / diligence) expressed through avodah (service)
Anchor Texts:
• “When you light the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the menorah.” (Numbers 8:2)
• “You are the light of the world… Let your light shine before others…” (Matthew 5:14-16)
• “Do not quench the Spirit.” (1 Thessalonians 5:19)
Core Intention for the Week
This week we move from spiritual dullness or neglect to active Zerizut — diligently tending the flame of the Ruach so that the light of Messiah shines brightly and continually through our lives.
Guiding Question: Where has my spiritual light grown dim, and how can I diligently raise and tend it this week for the glory of Yeshua?
Maintain a small notebook or notes app for daily reflections. Each day includes:
1. Morning Kavanah (Intention)
2. Action Practice
3. Evening Cheshbon HaNefesh (Soul Accounting)
Morning Kavanah (Every Day)
Upon waking, recite slowly (out loud if possible):
“Today I raise the lamps, L-rd. Fill me with pure oil and help me shine the light of Yeshua diligently before others.”
Pause for one full breath, picturing Aaron carefully lighting the menorah so its light shines forward.
Daily Action Practices
Day 1 – Awareness: Checking the Flame
Practice: Honestly assess the brightness of your spiritual light right now (prayer, Scripture, love, witness).
Reflection Prompt: What soot or distraction has dimmed the flame?
Day 2 – Clean the Lamps
Practice: Clear one specific distraction or sin that has been reducing your light. Confess it and remove it.
Reflection Prompt: How did clearing the soot affect your sense of clarity?
Day 3 – Fill with Pure Oil
Practice: Spend focused time in the Word and prayer, intentionally “filling the lamps” with pure oil.
Reflection Prompt: What fresh oil did the Ruach pour into you today?
Day 4 – Raise the Light
Practice: Intentionally let your light shine — encourage someone, share a word of hope, or perform a visible act of kindness for Yeshua’s sake.
Reflection Prompt: How did raising the light impact others and yourself?
Day 5 – Continual Flame
Practice: Throughout the day, when you feel the flame flickering, pause and re-light it with a short prayer or declaration of truth.
Reflection Prompt: What difference did continual tending make?
Day 6 – Communal Light
Practice: Help another believer tend their flame — pray with them, encourage them, or study Scripture together.
Reflection Prompt: How does lighting others’ lamps strengthen the whole menorah?
Day 7 – Renewal of the Light
Practice: Review the week. Renew your commitment aloud: “L-rd, I will diligently raise the lamps. Keep the fire of Yeshua burning brightly in and through me.”
Reflection Prompt: Where did the light of Messiah shine most clearly through you this week?
Repeat this practice and watch how Zerizut turns a flickering faith into a steady, shining lamp that brings glory to the true Light of the World.
